Exotic Medicine

What is exotic medicine?

Many vet practices specialise in small animal care (generally cat and dog, with some rabbits) and do not offer veterinary care for other, more exotic species.

This means that owners of birds, reptiles, amphibians and more unusual mammals such as ferrets do not always have access to the specialist knowledge and care their pets need. It is the care of these less conventional pets that we term exotic medicine. We’re very pleased to have a great team who are experienced in exotic pets here at Cheshire Pet.

Cheshire Pet is the place to bring your exotic pets such as rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, and snakes.

Great news for your pet!

Dietary & husbandry advice for all species

Up to 95% of exotic pet disease is caused by incorrect animal husbandry, no matter how well-meaning the owner. As part of our holistic approach to the care of exotic species, we offer free advice to all clients who have seen the vet – from creating an enriched environment for your red-eared terrapin to the correct diet for your macaw!

Special hospital facilities

At Cheshire Pet we have the expertise to treat mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. We are fully equipped to hospitalise all species of exotic pet – including big snakes! Our hospital facilities have been adapted to provide the controlled light, heat and humidity these animals need, and we can even house aquatic and semi-aquatic species. Our staff understand the need to provide a calm and peaceful hospital environment for all our patients – we’ve even considered the needs of the more nervous pets: Birds and bunnies and other small animals have their own separate, private unit – away from the big scary snakes! Elective and emergency procedures are carried out in-house at Cheshirepet avoiding the need for referral – so are less traumatic for your pet.
