Laparoscopy (Keyhole surgery)

What is keyhole surgery?

This technique allows surgeons to operate on animals through a very small incision. Special equipment is introduced via a hole the size of a 1p coin. The whole operation is relayed on a screen in the operating theatre, allowing surgeons to perform very intricate surgical procedures with minimal impact on the animal.

What are the benefits?

There are many advantages in using keyhole surgery. It is not suitable for every procedure, but biopsies (removing tissue for analysis) castration and spaying lend themselves particularly well to keyhole surgical techniques. The smaller incision required means:

  • Smaller scars
  • Reduced risk of wound infection
  • Faster recovery times
  • Reduced pain for the animal

Your vet will discuss all the options with you should your pet require surgery, and if we feel that keyhole surgery would be advantageous in a particular case, then we will go through the details and the specific benefits with you. The choice will always be yours.
